Why It Matters – Pollinators

Protecting pollinators is critical to maintaining healthy ecosystems and human food supply. Bees, for example, pollinate 70 out of the top 100 crops globally. And roughly 1 in 3 bites of food we eat is derived from plants pollinated by bees. Unfortunately, modern pesticides are killing bees. In 1947 there were 6 million honeybee hives …

“We cannot cure the world of sorrows, but we can choose to live in joy.” -Joseph Campbell Visiting Kentucky years ago was warm and wholesome, just like this first haiku. The trip included a visit to @bereacollege, a no-tuition liberal arts work college (check the photos to learn more!).
Who doesn’t love California? It’s got everything! But that means everything is threatened by climate change. Sea level rise, water scarcity, less snow pack, and of course wildfires. 🔥 So many of my friends and family live throughout the state and they’re all living these changes now. Happy World Oceans Day 💧 When I think of Pennsylvania, I think of my backyard as a kid, the bright greens of summertime, and the rural-suburban adventures my friends and I would go on. Time was punctuated by the different seasons.
“The light grew broader as they went on, and soon they saw that there was a rock wall before them… The twigs of the trees at its foot were stretched out stiff and still as if reaching out to the warmth…The boles of the trees glowed with a soft green like young grass…” -LOTR, The Two Towers, Chapter IV: Treebeard Alabama is one of the few states that isn’t getting warmer with climate change. It’s not getting drier either. In fact, the state’s normal rainfall, which in most of the Gulf can come in afternoon bursts, is changing to heavier downpours, flooding regions and not soaking into the soil. Paired with the intense humidity of the region, this doesn’t bode well for crop cycles, but it does for moisture-loving mosquitoes! Drought in the American Southwest is the worst in 1200 years, a/t a climate study released in February. If you saw me and Courtney on the street, like the cowboys who took these photos, you’d never know we fall on opposite ends of the political spectrum—we have some different beliefs and a couple different values. We definitely don’t agree on everything.
